Three point lighting with conventional lights in our small studio often produces an unbearable amount of heat. We have to shoot for a few mins then stop for a break while we turn down the lights and switch on the air con.
There is a wide variety of cold lighting on the market both fluorescent and LED. Most of the major light manufacturers have great selections available as well as the cheaper Chinese offerings competing for the bottom of the market. Truth be told, the right light for you really depends on what type of work you do and the distance from the light to your subject.
Fluorescents provide good even light but they don’t project very far so are typically placed 1-2 metres away from the subject. Beware of cheaper models as flickering can be an issue with certain shutter speeds. LED lights are able to project light a little further and tend to be more directional. They have very low power consumption and very long lamp life. They also run very cool and are very compact and lightweight.
The Prolux PLX-290 ENG Kit is excellent for a small studio such as ours. Their design is comparable to a Redhead with barn doors and feature a rear mounted dimmer control. We mounted them on our light grid and were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the light as well as the lack of heat! The kit consists of 3 lights, 3 power supplies, 3 stands, 3 sets of barn doors and a carry bag that holds everything. This is a great little kit for taking on the road, shooting in living rooms etc, without worrying if your lights will trip a fuse! Our kit is rated at 5600k but a 3200k version is also available. The light output of each lamp is comparable to a 300w halogen however the actual power consumption of each lamp is approx. 12w.
A good quality kit which is of great value in a small space where heat is an issue. You won’t go wrong here.
Our PLX-Bi1500, was supplied by TNP Broadcast. If you’re in the market for this or any other LED lights, give them a call and they will be happy to help.
